Elamipretide (also known as SS-31, Bendavia, or MTP-131) is a mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide that selectively binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid in the inner mitochondrial membrane critical for maintaining mitochondrial structure and electron transport chain function. This interaction helps stabilize mitochondrial membranes, reduce oxidative stress, and improve cellular energy production (ATP).
Preclinical and translational research has shown that elamipretide can enhance mitochondrial respiration, decrease the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and improve electron transport chain efficiency, leading to better cellular energetics and reduced oxidative damage in models of aging, cardiac dysfunction, and metabolic stress.
Clinically, elamipretide has been investigated for mitochondrial dysfunction-related diseases. In September 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted accelerated approval to Forzinity™ (elamipretide) for improving muscle strength in patients with Barth syndrome, a rare mitochondrial disorder.
A 300 mg vial typically refers to a compounded or investigational peptide formulation used under medical supervision for mitochondrial support protocols, aiming to support cellular energy, recovery, and resilience. While promising in research and emerging clinical use, broader therapeutic applications remain under study.
