Bremelanotide (PT-141) is a synthetic peptide that acts on the melanocortin receptors in the brain to enhance sexual desire and arousal. Unlike PDE5 inhibitors (e.g., Viagra), which work on blood flow, PT-141 targets central nervous system pathways linked to sexual motivation. It is FDA-approved under the brand name Vyleesi for treating hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women, based on clinical evidence showing meaningful improvements in desire and reduced distress.
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring neurohormone often called the “cuddle hormone.” It plays roles in social bonding, emotional connection, and aspects of sexual response. While not FDA-approved as a treatment for sexual dysfunction, oxytocin has been studied and discussed for its potential to lower sexual anxiety, enhance arousal, and strengthen orgasmic response through effects on brain circuits related to stress and intimacy.
In a troche formulation (a dissolvable oral lozenge), PT-141 and oxytocin are combined in a compounded product intended to support both libido (via PT-141) and emotional/connection aspects of intimacy (via oxytocin). Compounded troches are used off-label and should be administered under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider, as potency and absorption can vary and clinical evidence for oral/sublingual delivery is limited.
